During may of this year, the music mogul lil wayne publicly announced that he will quit recording music to pursue a career he loves, skateboarding. This statement raised many eyebrows in the skate community and rightfully so. After all, what does the young money rap star really know about skating? When it comes to weezys skating career, one can choose to look at the glass half full or half empty.
Taking the empty approach first, we look at his new brand "truk fit". The clothing produced by truk fit looks something like a cross between lrg and hot topic brand boy band t-shirts. In a nutshell, truk fit is a huge fail. So huge its in fact rumored that, to make the company appear to be in the black, the multimillionaire has taken to buying up mass amounts of his own product in order to not show any loss on paper. This rumor is very believable; especially if you've ever seen truk fit clothing.
But besides the fact that the clothing is not good, there may be a deeper motive; this motive is money. This brings us to the point were we all must ask "is lil wayne doing this as a publicity stunt to make money?". If taking the stance that this is indeed a publicity stunt, its easy to see how truk fit fits in with all of this. It seems lil wayne wants to create truk fit to be a main-stake in the skateboarding/street-wear industry, by using his fame as a rap star to parlay it into a career in skateboarding which he would then use to expand distribution on his company.
The question then lies: is this for the love or the money? I think the majority of the skateboarding world would agree with me in saying that if lil wayne is using skateboarding to make a buck, he can shove it were the sun don't shine. But, this is not a bash article on lil wayne, its an article made to state both sides of the argument. So now taking the glass half full approach, well look at what some heads of the industry have said about wayne and his skating career. Nick diamond (founder of diamond supply co.) had this to say about his experiences with wayne "He's humble and genuinely loves skateboarding". This statement is not only important because diamond is a good judge of character, but it exemplifies the other side of this argument, taking the stance that wayne actually does love skateboarding, (which is more likely than this being a publicity stunt at this point in the game).
If weezy loves to skate, it would be great to see him go out and really shred. But if its all for the dollar, and if hell toss his love for skateboarding like he tossed his love for good rapping, then we can expect wayne to make an exit soon. But for a businessman of his stature to stop recording million dollar tracks to pick up a skateboard, he must have a genuine love for the game. Only time will tell waynes true commitment and dedication to skateboarding. He now has his foot in the door, and its time for him to bust the door down, drop the B/S truk fit company and put out a great skate video. Do you think waynes really in it for the love or the money? Let us know what you think. Below is a video of wayne skating with nike sb pro omar salazar.
