Since 2011 there has been an on-going slew of rumors regarding any future collab with Diamond Supply and Nike SB. In August 2013 rumors were re-ignited when a simple tweet between DJ Skee and Nick Tershay hinted at a future project between the brands. The road to this collab has been a long one with several factors involved: Diamond is no longer just a "skateboarding" brand, they have an apparel line, sneaker division, and collaborations with other skateboarding footwear brands. You may remember this Dunk High from 2009 which was cancelled simply because the artist did a project with Circa right before its launch. Nike corporate powers view a collaboration with Diamond through a prism of conflict as unorthodox as a Nike x Reebok release.
Nike SB needs as much energy behind the division as they can get. Their brand is widely available now and local skateshops are in a world where they have to compete with chain retailers once again. This creates an environment where Diamond has an ace in the hole. One could argue that Diamond has one of the few collaborations which set the course for Nike SB. For better or worse, the original Dunk Low now retails for anywhere north of $500 in new condition and is one of the most popular "grails" amongst sneaker enthusiasts. This leans in great favor to the collaboration taking place, alongside the new "mint" box series (two tone boxes are for the QS).
The latest speedbump before these factory leaks was simply an issue of royalties. Obviously Diamond wants their piece of the cake this time around. No longer the "cool" factor of having a Nike SB collab exists for Diamond, everything is broken down to brass tax. Perhaps this is why they were originally denounced as being "fakes" by Nick Tershay himself, even though the latest leaks from the factories in Vietnam tell otherwise.
The shoe will release as a pack for Spring 2014, alongside an all black Dunk Low (which will be the more limited of the two). The Dunk High will be widely available, most likely in the realm of Nike SB's expanded distro.
